On Tuesday 10 May 2022, just before sunrise, Leo, a local farmer, with his wife and other local farmers in Banjar Bayad travelled to the rice fields with newly prepared offerings. This was a special day because Leo and the farmers in Banjar Bayad would be carrying out one of the essential Balinese rice ceremonies, Biyukukung.

After arriving at the rice fields, Leo and his wife prepared for the ceremony. They placed offerings in front of the Tugu (Pelinggih). After the prayers, they continued the ceremony with a walk around the rice fields placing offerings in each corner of the rice fields while reciting a prayer. The ceremony closed with a prayer in front of the Tugu (Pelinggih).

Biyukukung has been carried out for generations by farmers in Bali. The ceremony is an expression of gratitude to Dewi Sri, the Goddess of Rice and Fertility for making the rice plants fertile and ready for harvesting to meet the basic needs of the local communities. Biyukukung is carried out when the rice starts to bear grain and is carried out simultaneously in every Banjar (small settlement in Bali).
