Drag

Since the Pandemic began in 2020, there has been much interest in home activities, one of which is gardening. Not only is this a pleasant experience physically and mentally, gardening is also an activity that is connected to the environment and nature. One type of gardening which has a significant role in developing a sustainable environment is the permaculture garden.

What is Permaculture Garden?

A permaculture garden is based on the architectural development of sustainable plantations, prioritising regenerative agriculture, and the importance of natural ecosystems. The main key to permaculture gardening is to care for the earth and the people, taking what is produced and ensuring the rest is returned to the soil, so that nothing is wasted. A permaculture garden requires us to be knowledgeable about nature itself. It is not ‘one size fits all’, so we need to observe the area in which we want to create this garden. Permaculture gardens give us a place to observe nature and learn from it.

Begawan’s First Garden in Banjar Bayad

In August, the Begawan team commenced its first 26 Are permaculture farm garden in Banjar Bayad after conducting an in-depth assessment to identify soil conditions, vegetation, and the potential to improve the environment. We are planning and designing this first garden, identifying plants, looking at how livestock, poultry, and fish farms can play a part in a program for regenerative agriculture. This garden will be a learning model for Begawan’s team, the local community, and visiting guests, based on permaculture principles that encourage sustainable, regenerative agriculture. We want to make not only beautiful creations but also ensure that Begawan and the local community see the results and benefits socially, environmentally, and economically.

Located near the Regenerative Rice Fields where we are growing traditional heritage Mansur rice, we hope that students and visitors will not only be able to learn about regenerative rice fields, but also learn and enjoy our permaculture garden. (Anggi Agustin)
