Karate is a Japanese martial art which is well-known across the globe for its emphasis on physical and mental discipline. It is a form of martial art which can be used for self-defence. Karate features some impressive movements of powerful punches, kicks, and blocks. Begawan has been providing karate lessons for the Eco Warriors by collaborating with Bobo, a black belt holder in karate who also lives in Payangan. The karate lesson is held on Saturdays at Begawan Learning Centre. During the lesson, the students learn to perform katas, groups of choreographed movements that often include kicks and punches. Katas are memorised and practised solo or in groups prior to sparring with opponents.

On Sunday 17 April, ten students joined Karate Belt Graduation which was held by Federasi Olahraga Karate-Do Indonesia (Forki) at Pusat Pemerintahan (PUSPEM) Payangan. These ten students included Gek Ami, Gek Sinta, and Kadek Agus who were yellow belt holders, and Wayan, Devi, Ayunda, Sangtu, Dhiky, Nindia, and Luh Sri who were white belt holders. They joined this event in order to achieve higher belt status. This event drew a large crowd and many participants since it was open for anyone who is passionate about learning karate.

Before the exam began, the participants were asked to do some stretching together for safety reasons. Then, they were given extra time to practise their katas within groups. The katas for each belt were different from one another in terms of difficulty level. Since there were plenty of participants, each of them was given a number which would be their identity during the exam. The evaluation of students’ katas was conducted by the Sensei, masters in karate who have held black belts for a long time.

After being assessed by the Sensei, the event moved on to the next schedule, sparring. This sparring was not only meant for older participants who had higher belts, but also younger participants who wished to try it. One of our students, Gek Sinta, decided to battle Bobo’s younger sister and succeeded in obtaining a few points.
