The Project

Begawan has been working to conserve Mitchell’s Lorikeets, native to both Lombok and Bali, now considered critically endangered on both islands.

“I visited Begawan Foundation in May of 2016 to initiate the program to return these birds to Bali,” says David Woolcock, Curator of Paradise Park. Paradise Park chose Begawan to launch the program to return Mitchell’s Lorikeets to Bali in 2016, as our foundation has demonstrated the ability to keep and breed the species, in addition to the bird keeping and veterinary skills at the centre, which are exceptional.

Begawan is also collaborates with the World Parrot Trust (WTP). The WPT funded the construction of six Lorikeets’ enclosures at Begawan for these beautiful but extremely rare birds. Begawan has a pair of Mitchell’s Lorikeets and three Forsten’s Lorikeets by January 2022. There are plans to reintroduce Lorikeets into the wild in the coming years.
